I find the comments dealing with concrete suggestions most helpful. Grammar critiques or suggesting the addition of more adjectives makes sense to me, and I try to tailor my corrections accordingly. Multiple people have commented that my writing is choppy. Honestly, I enjoy writing this way. It matches my personality. I'm not sure if these storytelling assignments are meant to encourage us to write in a certain style. If so, then I'll try to listen to these comments more. It seems like these kinds of comments just depend on the reader. "Everybody's gotta do things their own way!" says my father.
Personal photo of Jett Taylor. This kid had to write up a storm for his science fair project. If he can do it, so can we!

I agree...I like the fact that we are required to read each others stories and posts. In addition, I also agree that sometimes meeting to word requirement can be a big challenge. In my opinion, sometimes short and sweet is better than elaborate and filled with fluff. For me, I like to know what needs to be fixed or reworded in my stories but I also like the positive comments too. Sometimes I just need to know that I'm doing a good job or that I'm on the right track.
ReplyDeleteYour picture brings back so many memories for me. I had to do plenty of science fair projects when I was growing up. I always dreaded them. Now, I have to help my children do them & sometimes it can be a real struggle for me to do. Jett's project looks awesome though!!!
Anyway, good luck with the rest of this semester and in this class as well. I look forward to reading some of your posts!
I definitely agree that the word minimum can be difficult to reach in some instances. But I do like that it kind of pushes me to really look at the writing more in depth and offer substantial commentary. I think that without a word requirement, it could prevent people from really leaving worthwhile and substantial comments, which for me are really important to receive because it helps me to better my writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely with you on the concrete suggestions though. It can sometimes be hard to know what to do with critiques that don't offer a concrete solution.
